Let's put this out of the way for the fan-boys, I did not enjoy either of those two movies, but that doesn't matter since this movie is a totally new concept and implementation from the director, it doesn't fall under the category of for-the-fans-of. What I mean by that is, with this latest venture, Darren is going to lose a lot of his fan-base... but does he gain a new one?
The film has a complicated three-pronged plot that's painstakingly interwoven into each other.
First, the neurosurgeon Tommy, played by Hugh Jackman, who thinks of death as an illness that can be cured and hence is working towards finding that cure. He's more motivated to do so because of his wife Izzy played by Rachel Weisz who has cancer. Izzy has a special interest in Mayan Culture, their underworld nebula called Xibalba and their concept of death. She tells Tommy that she's even writing a book called The Fountain set during the Spanish Inquisition era about it. She gets a sudden attack of stroke and this time she tells Tommy that she isn't able to finish the book, gives him a pen and ink asking him to write the last chapter. She tells Tommy that he'll know how to end the book.
Second storyline takes place during the Spanish Inquisition (15-16th Century AD) which has the Grand Inquisitor trying to take over the whole land. Rachel Weisz is Queen Isabella here and Hugh Jackman plays the role of her loyal Conquistador Tomas. Tomas is trying to kill the Inquisitor when he receives an urgent message from the Queen. The Queen, as per Father Avila's theories and findings, asks Tomas and his men to find the hidden Mayan Pyramid which has the Tree of Life. The Queen tells him that with the Tree of Life, they both can live together forever. To cut to the next important thing that happens in this story, Tomas finds the pyramid, the Mayans kill the rest of his men but let him go up the pyramid where he faces their spiritual leader.
