1995s “Plastic Green Head” was a solid outing from the band and mixed their classic doom metal sound with psychedelia. However, it was 1995 and the album was lost in the grunge flood. Since then, Trouble have remained silent and I had no hope of another album from the band. Then in 2002, the band reformed and last year released the DVD “Live In Stockholm.” 2007 sees the release of the new album by Trouble “Simple Mind Condition.”
Trouble though have always been a bit of a conundrum. They sort of sound like doom metal but every now and then they have a softer sound that’s a little like the Beatles and more often than not they’re locked into a groove that would make Iommi or Blackmore proud.
Opening song ‘Goin’ Home’ sets the tone straight away and you’re left in no doubt that this is the same band that recorded classic metal songs like “The Tempter” and ‘Memory’s Garden.’ Eric Wagner’s voice is still in top form and the guitars of Bruce Franklin and Rick Wartell invoke the best of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and to a lesser extent, Led Zeppelin. Stand out tracks include the superb “Pictures Of Life” which reminds me just a little of classic Blue Oyster Cult, the mellow ballad “ After The Rain” which features a terrific vocal performance from Wagner and the riff heavy “Troublemaker.” For this re-union it seems like the band have left behind a lot of their heavy metal sounds in favour of a classic rock sound that’s so retro you can’t help loving it.
Fuck trends. Trouble have come roaring back like the last two decades never happened. A quality comeback that deserves to be placed right up there with “Manic Frustration” and “Psalm 9.”
