Porcupine Tree - The Incident
Music

porcupineTreeTheIncidentPorcupine Tree has never shied away from incorporating new styles into its swirling, pscyhedelic brand of prog-rock. So its no surprise that the band display several more contemporary influences in their latest release - the mammoth 75-minute long 'The Incident' - ranging from Indie (Drawing The Line) down to NiN-esque downtuned guitars and programmed beats (the title track). Now considering the album's purported eclecticism and length are its two most apparent features - lets consider these and see if they could click in PT's favour. Firstly, Porcupine Tree have always been adept at playing an amalgam of styles - and this has brought within their reach a particularly large (and often-times annoying) fanbase, while still retaining the respect and fandom of the more kvlt of the lot. And it could also be argued (I would definitely do so) that the superior and more interesting songs of the bunch have always been those of greater-than-average length. What I consider to be the very pinnacle of the band's style - their former full-length, is composed of several tracks of relatively collosal length. So, really these two issues are no biggie are they ?

But then again, putting theory to practice is rarely a guaranteed success. 'The Incident' is a disjointed, random collection of songs - with sloppily executed, 'hip' parts, trite lyrics and bare-bones instrumentation. The entire album is one long snoozefest - made even more so by a pointedly lacklustre performance on vocals by the otherwise stellar Steven Wilson. Gone are the sudden, in-your-face heavy bits, gone are the booming bass licks - all replaced by a pronounced stupor that the band seems unwilling to wake from. What is almost completely missing is PT's mesmerizing use of the acoustic guitar - which is mere background noise on the album, but for the Animals rip-off that is 'Time Flies' which is inexplicably the most memorable track on the album. There's no quirks going around either (and by quirks I mean, say the saxophone on 'Don't Hate Me') but for the goofy modernisms the band throws by the listener every now and then. In seeking to push the band further and further down the road of progression, it appears Wilson has taken it over the edge - with the very soul of the band seemingly at stake on this record.

I can only see this one in two ways, either this album is a desperate cry from a band that see themselves constrained by the limitations of their chosen genre or its a sign that after more than two decades of producing quality music - they may have finally lost it. One hopes for the sake of us hardcore fans, who can't get through the week or even a day without their dose of PT that it is the former. Perhaps more time was what the band required to flesh out something truly worthy of the Porcupine Tree tag. Time has a way of erasing the undue, and for Wilson's sake at the least - one hopes that the memory of this one falls through and the brilliance that is the mark of PT invigorates itself once more.

(That said, I probably will be attending the PT gig next month in Bombay anyway.)

Good start Aditya. I've tried three times but still haven't been able to go past the first few songs. A pretty disjointed effort that does have a few cool parts.

Terrific review - and very satisfyingly verbose *-) I didn't have as many problems with the album per se (other than the triteness of the lyrics. Time Flies? Really now!). It did sound like the new Paradise Lost — more of a hard-working album than a genuinely good one. An album where the band members struggled to make songs 'interesting.' Having said that, I consider both albums fairly worthwhile. I'd have given this a more average 2.5.

I'm a huge PT fan and this album disappointed me. Time Flies and Octane Twisted are the only songs worth listening to more than once.

Worse, PT will be playing every song from Disc 1 at Bombay. Quite a bummer.
