Re:My Dying Bride - For Lies I Sire
Mar 21 2009 12:24:48 Too bad. Wasn't much of a fan of the previous album and overall I'm not sure if this band has aged as well as the other peaceville bands, and I'm talking about the classic albums.

Re:My Dying Bride - For Lies I Sire
Mar 21 2009 13:12:20 I found A Line of Deathless Kings unbearably cheesy; looks like the new one is more of the same. I don't know what went wrong, I think I still like the classic stuff or at least The Light At The End Of The World, and I still certainly love the song Edenbeast. Maybe they're just trying too hard to stick to what they see as their formula, since experimentalism didnt take them or indeed any of the Peaceville gang very far?

Re:My Dying Bride - For Lies I Sire
Mar 21 2009 13:22:32 Yeah I think so too. They have a set fanbase that loves what they do and so they're just repeating the same shit album after album. This one is basically a watered down Light at the End of the World without the epic atmosphere or the heavy songs.

Re:My Dying Bride - For Lies I Sire
Mar 21 2009 13:26:44 In reply to JP: Well that holds good only for Paradise Lost and to an extent Katatonia (depends on how you liked Viva Emptiness) really. Anathema has always been just great.

Re:My Dying Bride - For Lies I Sire
Mar 21 2009 13:27:03 I suppose there's always a core fanbase that just loves the formula and doesn't care about diminishing creative returns in how it's used. So says the man with the entire Lightnin' Hopkins discography in his collection.

Mar 21 2009 13:28:06 Yes, I'd take your case if I knew who Lightnin' Hopkins was.

Re:My Dying Bride - For Lies I Sire
Mar 21 2009 13:47:15 Would Nevermore fall into the same category of set formula, diminishing returns? I mean, I think they hit their peak with Politics and Dreaming and then set about repeating that formula in successive albums albeit in a slightly watered down version.
What do you lot think? |

Re:My Dying Bride - For Lies I Sire
Mar 21 2009 15:12:02 Nevermore's peak was way higher, and their weaker albums are still better than most of MDB. It's still worth looking forward to a new Nevermore album. MDB's case is a lot closer to Malmsteen. That is, highly influential and followers have used their formula and still put out good albums while the leaders have been slacking but going on releasing weak new albums.

Re:My Dying Bride - For Lies I Sire
Mar 21 2009 15:50:07 I wasn't comparing the two bands, simply saying that while Nevermore has managed to maintain a high level of quality they still are essentially retreading the same formula and the albums aren't as good as they used to be while still being quite kick ass. :p

Re:My Dying Bride - For Lies I Sire
Mar 21 2009 16:17:57 Should've mentioned the kick ass bit then. Nevermore is still the best, for the lack of a better word, clean metal band in the past 15 years.
