Millions is somewhere on the same road as Wetnurse and Black Elk except that this lot don’t have the complexity of Wetnurse or the bottom heavy ferocity of Black Elk. Instead, Gather Scatter is more punk rock. The emphasis is on grooves (however dissonant they might be) and a furious garage rock styled delivery that works superbly. The band is always noisy, always sound pissed off and right through the album sound like a train going off the tracks while still managing to put together some seriously heavy grooves that will get you moving. Stand out tracks include View from a Sinking Ship, Saddle Up and Ride and Getting the Last Word which make up the albums strongest part with each song focusing on a rampaging hardcore groove held together by some dissonant riffing and great interplay between drums and bass while throwing in just enough tempo changes to keep the listener guessing. Life is Satisfactory reminds me of Black Flag and has a real punk rock feel to it while also going through some very noisy and atonal guitar playing. Album closer We Make Poor Decisions is also the lengthiest song on the album and goes through a variety of moods all of which seem quite depressing and noisy before ending it all with an extended drone. Millions is another one of these noisy post hardcore bands that owe most of their sound to Black Flag and The Jesus Lizard. Having said that, this band also manage to inject a fair amount of originality into their music and while I’m pretty sure these songs are going to kill in a live setting they’re not too bad on CD either. Millions is a band to keep an eye out for and for fans of the label and other artists like Black Elk, Gather Scatter is an album that is well worth checking out. Label - Seventh Rule Records Year of Release - 2009
