Though many parallels can be drawn between album openers The Flood and Drawing Dead (from Heathens), Beyond Colossal shows a much more aggressive side of Dozer. Comparing in units of pure sweltering rock fury, riffs like the intro to Message Through Horses and Fire For Crows could give any High on Fire riff a run for its money. Maintaining a fine balance, you have an equal amount of songwriting that pays homage to the desert as well, resulting in raw, upbeat, power chord driven portions which have the characteristic Dozer twist to them. Grand Inquisitor, with its simple QOTSA styled melodies and memorable hooks, topped off with an absolutely crushing chorus, is an instant classic and one of my (if not THE) favourite Dozer tracks. Fredrick Nordin makes full use of his vocal cords, ranging from uncannily melodic crooning to the rough and tough ways of typical stoner rock, as and when needed, aligning himself perfectly with the fuzz. Neil Fallon from Clutch is featured on a couple of songs but his presence is hardly felt. Opting to end with a softer track, Bound For Greatness has soulful organs playing host to solemn, whiskey soaked vocal lines, rounded up with minimal guitars. The song just goes to show that Dozer have always had much more facets to them than the one-dimensional stoner rock band. I can only imagine what the successor to this album will sound like. Dozer have set high standards and I’ll wager that I’m not the only one with high expectations. They’ve paid great attention to detail on this album and have packed it with wonderful songwriting; songwriting that’s ballsy, unique and worthy of a ton of listens. This one is up there as far as ’08 releases are concerned.

Re:Dozer - Beyond Colossal
Feb 05 2009 22:50:48 Is this my imagination or do a large proportion of the stoner rock albums reviewed here get huge scores? Is this one of those "easy to do well" varieties of rock?

Feb 05 2009 23:05:45 No. Its more like we don't bother with your average run of the mill stoner band even if its a decent-ish release, unless its over hyped crap like The Sword. And as a genre it's very difficult to do well. In the case of Dozer it's taken them 5 albums to get this good.

Re:Dozer - Beyond Colossal
Feb 05 2009 23:47:53 Well i do think there's a huge amount of reviewer bias when it comes to stoner/doom (and 70s-80s metal pastiche) out here. Throw in a +100 of verbosity and I'd have sworn some of the reviews been written by the infamous Nin Chan. And IMO it is a very "easy to do well" genre - if Sabbath had not written Children of the Grave in particular, I have no idea what a lot of these guys would be doing. Anyway, after wasting my time on some totally pointless releases, I have become a tad more circumspect. But it's of course the nature of the beast that is reviewing - I doubt anyone here other than me would give a 5 rating to 'Wake Me When It's Over' by Faster Pussycat.
BTW, where exactly are The Sword hyped? I keep hearing "The Sword this overhype that" to the point where i expected to see them on VH1 while surfing or to hear of the palatial mansions they live in on CRIBS, or about the time they got busted doing drugs with Jack Nicholson and gangbanging Rhianna. Gods of the Earth while nowhere near a great album was totally not as bad as it was made out to be over here, and Age of Winters was hand's down one of the most enjoyable albums in this very soundalike derivative genre. I daresay it whups the ass of ALL the Dozer I've heard - their albums start well and they get points for having a Cornellesque vocalist as opposed to The Sword's squawker but by around song 6 I start to lose interest totally and by the end of the album have become a dozer myself. Will check this album out nevertheless. |

I'd sympathise but, at the risk of flogging a dead horse, you aren't helping balance it out by contributing your own reviews. And come on, your posts about albums are just a little shorter than most of my reviews. If publishing is too much of a hassle, just forward the copy to me and I'll do the rest. Pendragon, Helstar, Manilla Road - it's not too late! Give all of them 5s, and all shall be well again. P.S - Ereb Altor, too. |

Re:Dozer - Beyond Colossal
Feb 06 2009 17:16:42 While Ravi contemplates a descent from brokeback mountain, I should probably contemplate beginning to review stuff again too. The good thing about this site is that, like hellride or even peacedog it does have certain leanings, but these are never concealed so it's quite an upfront bias and one that you can correct for as needed. A slight extra shot of variety in reviewing choice is really all that I would wish for.
