Page 1 of 2 In light of Alex's Skolnick recent return to his roots, we thought it might be a good time to find out just what the nature of those roots were and hear out the reasons for his venture into jazzy terrain. Commencing brain-picking... Early Days KvltSite: How did you pick up the guitar and who were the guitarists that influenced you then? Alex: Well, when I started out, it was because of Kiss. They were my favorite band for a few years. Eventually, I got into Van Halen and Ozzy Osbourne. Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads were my two favorite guitar players. Then I checked out the guys they were into - Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix. That's where it all started. KvltSite: Kiss seems to have influenced a whole lot of American 80s guitarists that I dig, including you, even though they didn't have much of a guitar hero other than Ace. Was it because this was the biggest hard rock band in your eyes? Alex: I think Kiss had such a strong influence because they were like superheroes. It was like having Batman, Superman, Spiderman and Captain Marvel in the same band. When you're ten years old, this is a big selling point. Alex: I liked the Sex Pistols and Judas Priest. To me, it all sounded like great hard rock. I wasn't really aware of the drastic differences of the movements they came from. KvltSite: How much do you owe your playing, learning and early development to Joe Satriani's tutelage? Alex: I studied with him for two years. I credit him with inspiring me to learn music theory and become a more serious musician. |
