Let's get one thing straight right at the start of this review, I love Autopsy. If Reifert and Co. decided to reform Autopsy today, recorded, and released an album full of their own farts I would give it a high rating. Autopsy in my eyes can do no wrong.
 
So let us get down to the actual album. "Acts Of The Unspeakable" often seems to be last in line with all the praise showered towards "Mental Funeral" and to a certain extent the double punch of "Severed Survival" and "Retribution Of The Dead." That in my humble is more than a little unfair on this classic of early 90s Death Metal.
 
Autopsy had the innate ability to make every song of theirs seem longer than it actually was. Now I mean that in a good way and here's why. Chris Reifert (Drums and Vocals) Danny Coralles (Guitars), Eric Cutler (Guitars) and Josh Barohn on Bass would throw in elements of doom, death, grind and occasionally the odd punk beat into one song. Add to that the often-chaotic lead guitar and you have a song that you think must have lasted for at least 4 minutes. Yet in most cases, the songs are half that length and you are left wondering how they managed to fit in everything that they did into two and a half minutes. A case in point would be the song "An Act Of The Unspeakable." The song starts off with a typical death metal riff and proceeds to pummel your head in with sheer brutality. This is before the song drifts away into an almost dirge like feel replete with doomy guitar work and Chris Reifert shouting out the immortal words of "You Fucking Whore..fuck you."  After this doom intermission the song kicks back into hyper speed death metal with a truly brilliant lead guitar trade off between Eric Cutler and Danny Coralles. This is the essence of Autopsy on this album. Even the short (sub-1 minute) songs never descend into noise. Every riff is well thought out and fits into the song perfectly.
 
Chris Reifert is a Vocal God. I am yet to hear anybody who can match his guttural magnificence, and he's not too bad with the drums either. No, I take back what I just wrote about his drumming. He is actually pretty awesome behind the drums. Danny Coralles and Eric Cutler are a superb guitar duo who just absolutely slay every guitar duo that this genre has.
 
"Acts Of The Unspeakable" sits in my top ten list of metal albums of all time and is an essential release for anybody who is even remotely interested in American Death Metal.
