Technical or progressive music often has a way of falling prey to its own pretensions, of being sucked into the inflated egos of the musicians practitioning such form of music. There are many examples of such bands where the sum of the parts has ended up being far lesser than the parts themselves. case in point: every Dream Theater album after Metropolis:Scenes From a Memory or mercurial Dutch death metal band Pestilence's last studio album Spheres or Athiest's disastrous foray into the murky realm of death-metal-by-way-of-jazz wankery on Elements. Technicality in death metal is even more iffy, with lapses ranging from a near total lack of acknowledgement to some pioneers ( I could scream my lungs hoarse about Hellwitch and I'm sure most of you would go "Hell who??") to appliance of what is a rather elite adjective to third grade rejects of the putrid underbelly of death metal (I'm sure all of us have seen "Fisted By Maggots play fast, technical, brutal, skullfucking YAAAAARGGHHH death metal" proclamations) and nearly all NYDM (yes you, Suffocation. Why do people call your music "technical"?).

Re:Anata - The Conductor_s Departure
Oct 26 2007 19:36:26 Yeah, nice.
Never liked Spawn of Possession too much but for modern day tech death, it's a fight between Martyr and Anata for me. I'd probably choose Anata for being more prolific though. Edit: Next time try to trim it down if it gets this verbose da. Or hand it to chacko or jp to help you with it. I mean, the first two paragraphs are totally an optional reading and it's still a good length review. |

Oct 26 2007 23:27:46 aye aye captains.shall be addressed in the future. this one, I felt I needed to be as wordy as I did, like I almost owed it to the band. heh.
@chax - yeh.i do not like Six Degrees. not to say that I like Falling... very much either (or that it's better than 6DoT) but DT has been consistently inconsistent from that album onwards. don't read too much into it. |

Re:Anata - The Conductor_s Departure
Oct 27 2007 23:14:41 Terrific album and a good review, although i would have to disagree with the Pestilence and Athiest comment. I love those two albums.

Oct 28 2007 02:40:07 Excellent review. I liked the verbosity! But yeah, I disagree as well with the Pestilence and Atheist comment...

Re:Anata - The Conductor_s Departure
Oct 28 2007 17:21:20 Nicely done. Without doubt, their most innovative venture till date with some wicked cool harmonizing and some of the most brilliant bass playing on any Anata album yet. 'Downward Spiral..' and 'Better Grieved..' are personal favourites.
No one seems to have much to say about the coverart/artwork, it may be of small significance but the art complements the mood of the album perfectly. Yes, The Conductors Departure kicks all kinds of arse. And Sri, the first two paragraphs could have been edited to better effect. Reads more like an essay than a review. |

Oct 29 2007 20:07:27 The artwork looks apt for some Clive Barker story.
