I hopefully wouldn’t need to describe Megadeth’s sound to any of you, failing which presumption, YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO BE ON KVLTBLOG. GET YOUR FILTHY ASS OUT OF HERE MOTHERFUCKER!
On to the good parts of the album now. As mentioned before, the song structuring and lyrical work are highly reminiscent of Countdown To Extinction, especially on songs like Sleepwalker and Amerikhastan which mirror the kind of elaborate finesse displayed on songs like Foreclosure of a dream and Architecture of Aggression. There's a lot of mid-paced ass kickers on the album such as the title song, Pray For Blood and the rather melancholy You're Dead which might I add, is a dead ringer (haw!no pun intended) for This Was My Life. The lyrics are extremely well written too, mostly dealing with the Iraq war and some Bush-bashing thrown in for good effect.
You must send in the Mossad, turn off the BBC, CNN And don't look back Rest assured there'll be no more Middle Eastern crisis. Hell, there'll be no more Middle East!” There are a couple of clunkers on the album, such as the aforementioned Gears Of War and a new version of A Tout Le Monde with Christina Scabbia (of Lacuna Coil) further emasculating an already limp-wristed piece of work. However, these are only minor aberrations in what is otherwise an extremely ballsy, all out thrasher.

Re:Megadeth - United Abominations
Oct 26 2007 15:37:50 Hm - I had similar feelings about this album. It is probably the only album after Cuntdown (which was worth it only at the ultra cheap price it was sold here - 295 bucks, natch!) that I'd consider owning. Here's a reprint of my review for JLT:
Megadeth – United Abominations Dave Mustaine ran Megadeth to the ground through the 1990s in a doomed attempt to turn a pioneering thrash metal band into a Top 20 hit single outfit. Around the release of Youthanasia, he crowed about how Marty Friedman was not allowed to go "wheedly wheedly whee" all over the album. Which was too bad, because guitar excess was the only reason to hear Megadeth  take that out and all you had left was Mustaine's thin, annoying voice. While not much of a return to the sound of the late 80s, UA is Megadeth's most interesting album since Rust in Peace. "Wheedly wheedly whee" is back and after a couple of listens, you forgive Mustaine for reprising the rhythm section from Take No Prisoners during the leads on Sleepwalker. The solos on Washington Is Next almost compensate for the fact that the song liberally rips off Wasted Years by Iron Maiden. Sure there's filler  Never Walk Alone and Blessed Are The Dead are ruined by Mustaine's persistent delusions about being able to carry off a tune. There's also an unnecessary re-recording of Megadeth's sappiest moment  A Tout Le Monde  as a duet with Cristina Scabbia from Lacuna Coil. Mustaine saves the best for the latter half  Play for Blood features a chunky infectious rhythm and near incessant lead breaks. The same approach can be heard on Amerikhanistan and Burnt Ice. The production is lightweight but the music is mostly top notch. Mustaine and Glen Drover are a pretty effective guitar team and even if the solos are not as memorable as they used to be, they are at least good. The last set of songs (other than A Tout…) are about all the reasons you need to get UA; even if you are a lapsed fan. |

Enjoyed the read.. danke. @ravi - hah!I deliberately avoided mentioning the "recognize this riff?" going on on the first 3 songs. pretty similar sentiments about the album that side too, I suppose. excellent. @srikanth - yes sir!i'm trying to make it a minimum of one a day now, atleast till I'm on leave. SHIT, I've got to get back to Matt and finish that Pharaoh interview. :/ |

Re:Megadeth - United Abominations
Oct 31 2007 15:34:10 Good review Sri. I heard this album once while at work and with the volume turned way low and in between work it seemed like fairly decent fare. The only songs I've heard properly have been Sleepwalker (which was pretty kickass) and that A tout le monde thing (which does get points for mustaine's expression in the video).
The songs sound a lot better live though. I think Mustaine's voice being pretty low in the mix helps matters a whole lot. Even Gears of War didn't sound atrocious. |
