The album starts with the superb “Pill Shovel” which is bathed in 70s had rock and psychedelia and an ending that’s pure Black Sabbath. There’s also a reworking of “Nod Scene” from the debut ep and here the song has transformed from a self indulgent noisy tribute to psychedelia, to a rocking trimmed down version. The first real indication that the band was slowly but surely finding itself. Dave Wyndorf stepped out from behind all the effects and processors and let his clean singing voice dominate these songs. Also, there are places here on this album where he sounds quite like Chris Cornell did on “Louder Than Love.”

The production on this album is a lot better than on the previous ep and the songs benefit greatly from that. The guitars of John McBain and Dave Wyndorf were right in the front of the mix but the big change was the low end rumbling bass of Joe Calandra. Sounding like he was influenced big time by Geezer, the bass playing on this album is quite superb. None more so than on the lengthy and quite superb “Black Mastermind.” The bass comes to the fore around mid-way through this song and Calandra lends a solid foundation to the song as the rest of the band take off into fuzzy psychedelic rock. “Zodiac Lung” is a slow burning stoner rock song in the true sense of the word. A fuzzy distorted guitar riff weaves its way through the song as a clean guitar is plucked and Wyndorf sings about people getting on his nerves. Other highlights include the title song “Spine Of God” and another re-working from their debut ep in the form of the rocking “Snake Dance.” Here too, it is apparent that the band has grown quite a bit with this release. The album closes with another lengthy song in “Ozium” which starts off being an acoustic guitar led ballad before transforming into a dirge like fuzzy psychedelic rock song.

Monster Magnet had 2 speeds on this album. 3-4 minute balls to the wall rockers and the 8 minute fuzzed out trippy as fuck stoner rock epics. Credit to the band that they manage to pull off both styles really well.

“Spine Of God” is considered by many to be a landmark in the stoner rock genre and a hugely influential release. For me it is the next two releases that pushed Monster Magnet into the realms of Godhood. Still, “Spine Of God” is a superb debut album and while some parts are still a little self indulgent. You can guess that drugs played a major part in the writing of these songs but I enjoy this album too much for that to be a detriment. Perhaps not the classic stoner rock release that people make it out to be but damn good fun all the same.
