Gorefest – Mindloss Label – Foundation Year Of Release – 1991
“Mindloss” is for the most part an entertaining if generic exercise in European Death metal. The leaders of the scene at that time, Entombed, Dismember and even Grave all get name checked here. Gorefest come across like a mix of early Entombed and Dismember on Mindloss and although not particularly original, Mindloss is an entertaining album. The songs range from the full on death metal assault of album opener “Mental Misery” to the more melodic and mid paced “Confessions Of A Serial Killer.”
While Gorefest would go on to release albums far superior to Mindloss, the seeds of their unique sound were planted here. The Gorefest groove which was realised fully in the awesome Erase had already raised its head on this, their debut album. Check out “Foetal Carnage” and “Decomposed” for some very nice groovy death metal.
The songs are all well structured and most songs last for four and a half to five minutes. Again, I have to stress that “Mindloss” is not a classic of the genre but a solid and worthwhile album debut from this Dutch death metal band.
