Defecation – Purity Dilution

Consisting of the talents of Mick Harris and Mitch Harris, Defecation is old school grindcore mixed with a hint of death metal. The album opens with the mid paced super heavy intro “Magaton” after which “Purity Dilution” is a non stop adrenaline rush. Both Harris’s concentrate on pounding out non stop grindcore anthems.

“Life On Planet Earth Is Fucking Cancerous” and “Recovery” are just two of the songs on this album that helped lay the blueprint for grindcore. The production is lo-fi as it should be and the band excel at crafting dirty chaotic grind anthems. Another stand out track is “Mutual Trust” with its hardcore riff and absolutely chaotic drumming. This though, is nothing compared to my personal favourite song on the album “Focus” which bursts out of the speakers in truly awe inspiring fashion. Sounding like a mix of Napalm Death from their first two albums crossed with some death metal, this is the sound of a battalion of tanks on attack mode.

Both Mick and Mitch Harris would go on to play in Napalm Death on their watershed 1990 album “Harmony Corruption” where Napalm Death first incorporated elements of Death Metal into their sound. It’s also interesting to see Mitch Harris’s guitar playing here and his evolution from spotty kid playing grindcore to a genuine legend of the scene.

As both members went off to play in Napalm Death after “Purity Dilution,” Defecation came to an end after just one album till Mitch Harris resurrected the name and released a come back album in 2003 called “Intention Surpassed with no involvement from Mick Harris.

It’s been about 18 years since “Purity Dilution” was first released and till today it stands tall and on its own. A true Grindcore classic.

Mention must also be made of the re-issue that Nuclear Blast put out in 1998. Like all Nuclear Blast re-issues, this too is a crappy cheap job. A digipack with one band snap, no liner notes, no lyrics and a typo in the song list. Just irritating to pay full price for these shitty re-issues.
