Furze seems to be the brainchild of one Woe J Reaper from, quite predictably, Norway.

Trident Autocrat is mostly black metal but with a sense of Mr. Bungle in the music. A sense of the absurd, the atonal and the deliberate fucking around. It doesn’t seem to be too serious. Still, there is a strange power to this music. The album starts on a pure black metal assault with “Zaredoo Knives Endow Thy Sight” which sounds like something Dark Throne could be responsible for. The spoken word pieces and the vocals in general are a little difficult to stomach often sounding like the croaking of a frog or at times just being a series of moans. The recording and production is patchy and the mandatory treble heavy sound that all kvlt black metal releases must have is present and accounted for in Trident Autocrat.

The album is short at just over 30 minutes with six songs. Reaper handles all the music and writes all the lyrics. Furze takes the traditional black metal sound, the cold grim frozen black metal riffing and turn it about on its head. This is aggressive black metal and yet at the same time quite accessible to the more open minded heavy metal fan.

The first thirty minutes with Furze have gone well.

Still, as Trident Autocrat comes to an end, I’m not sure what to make of this album. Is this to be taken seriously ? This ultra grim black metal from the depths of the underground or should you take it with a pinch of salt and enjoy the music for its sheer extremity.
