I liked Sky Captain a lot...not the best of stories and Jude Law was not at all impressive in the lead, but I just dig the look of the film, the 1930's retro-futuristic stuff.

Both Serenity and Sky Captain would've been even better with a Bruce Campbell-like lead actor. Though I enjoyed Sky Captain fwiw, Serenity genuinely kicked ass. Both were made by sci-fi/space-fantasy nerds for sure.

Nathan Fillion goes for that 'tough guy with his heart in the right place' that Campbell has mastered. To be fair, he does a half decent job. Serenity is just Firefly with better production - which is a formula that works. Still quite a few lame jokes, but overall, the script had some thought put into it and the characters are likeable enough. River finally got to redeem her annoying savant act by getting to kick some ass, too.

Ok, now since we're at it, i.e. sci-fi...

How do you guys like the Star Trek films? I pretty much liked them all. They can get sloppy at times, but it's got lots of drama going on... I mean I'd say they are better than most of the stuff that gets passed off as sci-fi these days - well, more like those days.

Hey we should do a separate thread about it man. I have seen all those movies while growing up and nothing since so it'll be good to dig them up again.

Heh, while reading this I remembered this line
In a year I haven’t had nothing twixt my nethers that wasn’t battery operated!
you can just about hear Daffy Duck going "Romance Schmomance!!!"

Btw I thought the sword sporting black guy was closer to Cleric Brandt from Equilibrium.

Post edited by: loki, at: 2007/09/04 19:10

I haven't seen Equilibrium...so, that's another SF movie that sports a sword-wielding black guy?

Well, given the duration of the time that he wields it....ok, yeah it is.

Also..."While Whedon's writing is generally good, he suffers from being too much in love with the sound of his words and it sometimes feels like an adventure game where every dialog option is being accessed regardless of its value to the proceedings."

Great line, must remember to plagiarise it sometime.

Post edited by: chaxster, at: 2007/09/04 20:54

I wouldn't have pretty much to say if a thread was created for that sole purpose. I saw those films a long time back, need to see them again one of these days to refresh everything all over again along with the usual reminiscizing. Though I'll say I enjoyed the films with Patrick Stewart (TNGs) more than the previous ones

Yeah, the ST camp is usually divided into the original and TNG fans, neither of them giving any ground as to who kicks more ass. Voyager and Deep Space 9 probably don't even figure too much. And Enterprise...ugh.

I think most people tend to pick whichever of the two they saw first as their favourite. Of course, of the two TOS is infinitely superior. heh.

I never got around to seeing TNG films. Of the six movies I did see I like the Leonard Nimoy films best (The Search for Spock and The Voyage Home - the descriptions of these in Nimoy's book "I am Spock" make for very interesting reading). And as per IMDB they will be releasing a new Star Trek film some time next year featuring the original characters.

Oh and voyager is not without its finer points. Specifically those which manifest themselves in the form of 7of9's rather magnificent bosom.

Post edited by: loki, at: 2007/09/06 14:07
