TOPIC: Murderous May's Movies and Manuscripts

Re:Murderous May's Movies and Manuscripts 1 Year, 8 Months ago
^I'm yet to watch season 3 of Breaking Bad. I thoroughly enjoyed season 1 because of how unexpectedly funny it was, but I had mixed feelings about season 2. As you said, mostly because of Walter becoming increasingly unlikeable. Jesse-Walter hilarious bickerings make up for it though. I'll probably catch up on the show soon.

I forget if I've posted about Dexter season 4 or not, but seriously, one of the greatest comebacks I've seen from this type of show ever. John Lithgow's amazing and haunting performance singlehandedly revitalized this show. It seemed to be heading straight for the pooper after the lackluster season 3.

Saw Alice in Wonderland last night. Would probably have been spectacular in the theatre with 3D and what not but totally enjoyed this film anyway.

Saw Green Zone with Matt Damon as an American soldier in Iraq looking for WMDs only to find out that the people have been lied to and there aren't any. Made by the same guy who made the Bourne films but overall this is a bit dull and too much shaky camera nonsense.

Saw Blade II yesterday (AFTER ordering a cheap SE DVD of it at CD-Wow). This is kind of like the Matrix without its masturbatory "What is reeyal?" monologues, which in theory would be INCREDIBLY AWESOME...not exactly though. There's nothing in here to equal the spectacular Morpheus rescue sequence, but on the other hand there's plenty of good martial arts badasserie, lots of gorgeous color contrast wankery, and hilarious goofs like characters avoiding damage from ultraviolet rays by leaping into water (REALLY, Guillermo?).

Saw Iron Man 2 last night. Turned out to be mostly boring with one great set piece at the Monaco Grand Prix and almost 2 hours of Robert Downey Jr. being a smart ass. Sam Jackson was disappointing as Nick Fury, Scarlett Johansson was totally bland, Sam Rockwell was alright and Mickey Rourke was a pretty cool villain with not enough screen time. Overall a disappointing sequel with too much talking and not enough action.

Saw Panic starring William H Macy, Donald Sutherland and Neve Campbell. A movie about a contract killer suffering from a mid-life crisis. An excellent watch with a David Mammet feel to it and great performances from Macy and Sutherland.

The Adventures of Robin Hood
In this days of fancy computers and post-processing a lot of movies come off having a dour or sterile look. Why can't they use some of this fancy shit to render a movie that looks as vibrant and colorful as this classic 1938 rollicking adventure? The technicolor look is simply dazzling and eye-popping. I'd seriously consider going blu-ray for this.

The Devil's Rejects
Re-watch, but first time on the big screen and with the sound turned UP. Frickin' awesome.

Saw Lesbian Vampire Killers a pretty fun romp through Hammer-esque silliness which owed a huge debt to Shaun of the Dead. While I felt a bit shortchanged on the lesbian front, there's enough groan inducing puns and general cheesiness to keep me happy. It's about a couple of Brit everymen who show up at some out of the way outpost only to find they are part of a duo who is supposed to redeem the place of an ancient curse that makes all its women lesbian vampires.

Mother is probably the most disappointing Bong Joon Ho film I saw. It had a great premise but the fluidity with which he makes his films was missing somewhat. It's about an over-protective mother who embarks on an in-depth private investigation to vindicate her retarded son of mother. Still a good film but not an exceptional one like The Host or Memories of a Murder.

Doctor Who Series 5 (ongoing) now comes with my seal of approval. The Eleventh Doctor is pretty over the top, silly and has a really attractive Scottish companion this time around. It's refreshing, yet old school, complete with all the thrills and the pseudo-science. The writing is tip-top overall. I'm more kicked about this than the last two doctors. The two parter with the Weeping Angels was especially good.

Saw Volkerball a live concert DVD by Rammstein. These guys are easily the most spectacular live act I've ever seen - the show is so OTT it's almost absurd. Through the course of the show they set mike stands on fire, fire rockets into the crowd and use arm mounted flame throwers. It helps that they were touring Reise Reise which is my favourite album. Easily the best concert DVD I've ever seen; one that even edges out Live After Death if all you are looking for is a visually overwhelming concert experience.

saw on sunday...

L A Confidential Great performances from Russel Crowe, Guy Pierce and Kim Basinger. watched this again because I'd just finished re-reading the book and it's remarkable how they managed to take as complicated a book as this one and turn it into a terrific movie. A lot of the plot has changed and whole characters have been removed and the timeline has changed as well in the movie but overall one of my favourite modern noir movies. Basinger is so hot here.

Lonely Hearts with travolta and gandolfini as cops and jared leto and salma hayek as a psycho couple who con lonely women and kill them. not as good as i was hoping it would be but gandolfini, leto and hayek do a great job and travolta's his usual cop with a tortured soul blah blah.

the Yakuza Sidney Pollack's excellent gangster movie with an old Robert Mitchum still kicking ass in Japan. Mitchum is a world weary hood who travels to Japan to try and rescue his friend;s daughter who has been kidnapped. Nothing is as it seems obviously. Mitchum's terrific here and overall an excellent film.

Also started watching Doctor Who Season 5 after the Panaman's seal of approval and this is some good shit. First 6 episodes are a lot of fun with only the Vampires in Venice episode falling short of the mark. This new doctor is a bit over the top but fits the character and his Scottish side kick is damn cute. the episode with the dreams is my favourite one so far.
