Hot Tub Time Machine Like Family Guy to The Hangover's Simpsons. A few good jokes here and there but too much lame stuff that no one - actors included - seemed to have been having any fun with. Most of the jokes seemed to take for granted that just being set in the 80s or having Kickstart My Heart playing (man, that song seems to be the next Born to Be Wild as Hollywood shorthand for badassery and hijinks. I hope people stop using it - it was great in Shoot Em Up but sucks in this film. Unlike Born to Be Wild, it's an actually good song)was sufficient grounds for hilarity. The only genuinely funny scene in this film IMO was the one where Daryl the black guy from The Office puts a call through to his wife. And don't get me started on the fucking emo bits...

Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus
Terrific, except when it pays attention to its silly and shallow plot. Gilliam's vision totally rips a new one and even that Heath Ledger fellow is not half bad in this one (unlike his over-hyped boring run in Dark Knight). Christopher Plummer and Tom Waits have tons of fun playing off each other.

Coffy
Fast paced fun blaxploitation flick improved further by the tremendously sexy presence of Pam Grier. Two Thumbs up for eye candy :D

The Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner is a documentary by Werner Herzog based on the 1974 ski flying world championship and the eventual winner Excellent stuff based on a very eccentric central character and I think when Herzog has a slightly mad individual at the centre of his docs he just feel's inspired. Really good watch on what makes people want to ski fly and some stunning shots of the actual jumping.

The Eccentric Private Theatre of the Maharajah of Udaipur/ Jag Mandir Another Herzog documentary based around the celebration of Indian culture held by the Maharajah of Udaipur in 1991 in his palace the Jag Mandir. This was a show gathering over 2,000 performers from all over India and produced by some French dude who happened to be friends with Herzog and got him to come down and shoot a documentary of the event which was held for the maharajah's son and heir to the throne. Starts of really well but the last 30 minutes or so is just a long line of performers one after the other. Still pretty good.

Siren X starring the insanely hot Yuma Asami as a demon living in a lake with an unquenchable sexual appetite. A film crew shooting for "mini skirt adventures" get lost near her lake and promptly get taken in by the dmeon and her innocent smile and super hot bod. She has sex with the guys who don;t say no and then they die, often horribly and the lone woman and star of Mini Skirt adventures also dies a rather gruesome death before the demon walks back into the lake. Movie's kind of stupid and dull and not much fun but you do get to stare at Asami and her ridiculously perfect chest for 70 minutes.

Orgasmo/ ParanoiaEarly Umberto Lenzi giallo about a super rich American widow who comes to rest and recuperate in her villa somewhere in Italy. She meets and starts an affair with an obvious gold digging rascal and his super hot sister and shit happens. Caroll Baker is magnificent as the widow and someone who just makes the movie very easy on the eyes. The girl who plays the sister isn't too bad either. A pretty good film all told and decent timepass even if totally predictable.

Watched Multiplicity after many years. This one used to be a favourite of mine growing up, but I was somehow convinced it was going to be a letdown when I rewatched it. Surprisingly, it was still very enjoyable.

The premise and plot are its weak point (good for a short goofball skit, but too little for a feature length film). Michael Keaton (Doug) plays a guy who works in construction and is stretched thin between family and work. Unable to fulfill his responsibilities, he decides to clone himself so that he can catch a break work load wise. Of course, this doesn't seem to be quite enough, so he gets a 2nd clone. Soon after the clone decides to clone himself and then there's a 4th Doug. But as the movie explains, a copy of a copy can never be as good as the original, so Doug #4 is totally retarded.

Michael Keaton is seriously good in this movie. Doug #2 has a slightly macho and assertive personality compared to the original. Doug #3 is effeminate and sentimental compared to the original. Doug #4 is a total retard. Keaton really makes them feel like 4 different people. This can't have been easy seeing that he was basically playing off of a version of himself in many of the scenes. Yet he's very solid as each Doug throughout. An underrated performance me thinks.

Andie MacDowell is useless as usual. Supporting cast are barely existent. It's pretty much Michael Keaton all the time. The shortcoming of this film is its premise. Despite Keaton's efforts, I don't think it ever had a chance.

Speaking of which, watched Love, Sex aur Dhokha yesterday. While the first story drags you in thanks to the whirlwind cuteness of the romance, the second and third stories did drag a bit. All the actors were pretty darn great, especially the guy who played Loki Local, and the father in the first story. Very believable. Loved the soundtrack. Sneha Khanwalkar deserves huge props. I wouldn't say this is path-breaking cinema, but its definitely a good one time watch.

Also revisited Dil Chahta Hai. Akshaye Khanna's eyes and facial contortions were the funniest part of the flick. His furrowed eyebrows, faux-intellectual thinking look, and his forced 'should look arty' look should be immediately immortalized. It makes Rahul Bose look like an Oscar winning actor. Anyhow, i've always had a soft spot for this flick, and no matter how many times i watch it, it'll remain a decent watch nonetheless.

Dude, Dil Chahta Hai captured a point in time for all those who are in their late twenties now. I remember watching it towards the end of my first year of engineering with a bunch of college buddies, and the movie was a phenomenon. It was just fun sitting in a theatre watching it, the tremendous response that the music and dialogue got. Besides, it did the whole upstart, zingy, generation-X thing better than every other Hindi movie that has come in its wake. And it got the simple things right. For instance, the bit towards the end where Aamir is driving by Wilson College and reminisces of younger, happier times. Shit like that was great back in the day because we identified with it to an extent.

Maybe I just wasn't as jaded. It's still a classic, mainstream Bollywood movie though.

@ GoreD - I wholeheartedly agree. Its quite timeless, mind you - for its extremely easy to relate to. I'm not denying that i didn't enjoy the movie. As i said, it'll always be a decent watch. Just that i found Akshaye Khanna's mannerisms extremely contrived - don't know why i didn't think so earlier. Each and every dialogue doesn't require you to have a look which screams "i'm trying to pontificate heavily on the ramifications of this dialogue before i utter them".

Dil Chahta Hai is a landmark movie in terms of styling in Mainstream Bollywood. Without exception, every movie until then had characters dressed in atrocities rented out from Maganlal Dresswala (think Kajol's outfits in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenege), bought off from the stock that the good folks at Fashion Street rejected (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai) or handed down from Naniji (Hum Aapke Hai Kaun?). The set designs were the standard haveli backdrops that have been there since Dadasaheb Phalke made 'Raja Harishchandra' or the first 'Devdas'.

DCH, however, broke the mould in terms of styling character and sets- be it the hair, clothes, make up or even textured walls. Sadly, though, every guy living in a metropolis started growing fungus on his chin, spiking his hair with goat semen and started using kitchen scrubs to texturise walls (with the possible exception of the fine gentlemen here on this forum). Nonetheless, mainstream filmmakers' perceptions towards styling changed drastically after this movie.

I must have missed all the movies with those changed perceptions. I still see mostly crap outfits and crap hairdos (more now, with all the color streaking)

A Fistful of Dollars
Decent ripoff of Kurosawa's Yojimbo with Clint Eastwood as the (Gun)Man with No Name.

A thread where people are discussing the greatness of Dil Chahta Hai and someone calls A Fistful of Dollars a "decent" movie? Fuck, I'm out of here.
