TOPIC: July Morning and rest of the days spins...

Heard the Jonah Hex EP from Mastodon. Was pretty decent. More ambient pieces as is fitting a movie soundtrack but with enough ballsy moments to keep things interesting.

Also heard Gospel Haunted by Those Poor Bastards and decided I must revisit the older albums. This is weird oddball country with traces of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Black Oak Arkansas and very early Alice Cooper. Thoroughly enjoyable overall. While ostensibly a Christian rock band these guys are more focussed on the sinning than the redemption part of the equation.

Been burning through the vast amounts of Van Der Graaf Generator I bought in Madras. Very satisfying prog band. Ominously Crimsonic in their best parts.

Thou - Summit Imagine Crowbar around the time of Odd Fellows Rest and Equilibrium. Now take a smattering of keyboards, a string section, dissonant black metal riffing and slow it all down together. Thou are fantastic.

Across tundras - Old World Wanderer Like a light weight Sleep mixed in with country, grunge, americana and psychedelic rock. The band's best album yet with some really kickass songs.

Wow that sounds interesting.

Just heard some shitty acoustic singer/songwriter who attempts some sort of post-rock influenced easy listening, based on a random reco called Owen. Stay away unless you can stomach a d00d singing 'i'm so sick of waking up sore not knowing where i am and this was a lot of fun when the music meant something to someone that didn't have a girlfriend well somehow, getting out the same way that the earth moves around the sun'.

lulz.

Yawning Man - Nomadic Pursuits Damn, I was expecting a lot from this esp. considering that the flawless Rock Formations is one of my all time favs, but it totally fails in comparison. Nomadic Pursuits sounds like Russian Circles' Geneva or some other noodly post-rock band - there's no fucking RAWK in it. No driving beats, hardly any catchy riffs - nothing like Rock Formations. Though these guys were always laid back, they're a tad TOO laid back on this in a bad, post-rockish manner. Not a bad album by any means, but its Yawning Man for crissake! Oh well, I'll go listen to the new Fatso Jetson then...

Castevet - Mounds of Ash Awesome.

The Howling Wind - Into The Cryosphere Some more ripping black metal from the house of Profound Lore. Clean sounding, fast-paced, chaotic BM with some catchy riffs. Nothing particularly mind-boggling, but its mightily enjoyable.

Negura Bunget - Vîrstele Pamîntului Yes, very good stuff, but I think I like Om better (nor does it oust Castevet). More listens in order.

Ash Borer - EP Two song EP from the 'South Cascadian' band spanning 25 mins or so - excellent atmospheric BM in the vein of Wolves in the Throne Room or early Drudkh or Alcest. Their first album is going to be much talked about.

Skagos - Ást Another 'Cascadian' band who are great. More naturistic BM happening here. I'm surprised at the sudden exponential increase in good US/Canada BM bands!

Las Cruces - Dusk Solid album! This is the first time I'm checking out this band. Some great Black Sabbath worship happening with memorable riffage and whiskey-soaked vocals. Is the older stuff as good?

Solace - A.D.
High On Fire - Death Is The Communion
Hellacopters - Supershitty To The Max

Fuzz Universe began promisingly. No fuzz the way most of the kvltists understand the term in evidence though.

Across Tundra's Old World Wanderer gets better with every listen. I'm really liking this album and a lot of it just distorted country and folk with a bass player who graduated from the Geezer school of bass playing and the heavy parts sound a lot like a lighter softer Sleep. Overall, very cool album.

Ramesses - Take the Curse This is a big step up for the ex Electric Wizard drummer and guitarist. Way better than Misanthropic Alchemy from a few years ago, this is some really crushing doom metal sort of in the vein of Odd Fellows Rest era Crowbar mixed in with some proper euro doom.
