Yeah that Stonebuilder album was unhearable because of that guy's hideously bad vocals. It's lke he heard Cirith Ungol and decided he was going to show the world a worse singer doing that sort of metal.

Other than The Ungol's unquestionable greatness, Tim Baker was just the *perfect* vocalist for that band and that sound and that era. Call it an acquired taste if you have to but his voice became those very songs.

I went to this gig at B-52 in Koramangala last evening. Don't know anybody in Bangalore so just spent time drinking myself silly. Gig started late and was pretty shabbily organized. The place is obviously awkward for a concert of any sort. Met a few guys I've known from the internet. Bands were Abandoned Agony who play tech/brutal DM and three other core acts whose names I forget or don't care to remember. Bad sound with vocals completely drowned out but I'd like to see AA play with a better setup.
Listened to Melechesh-Sphynx and Squash Bowels-Grindvirus earlier today.

Are you being serious?
Old Corpse Road/The Meads of Asphodel - The Bones of this Land are not Speechless/English Black Punk Metal
This is one strange split. Old Corpse Road play 10 minute black metal songs that don't really go anywhere with an annoying drum machine. The Meads do one new song and do 4 covers of anarcho punk bands ranging from Doom to Hellbastard and a twisted cover of The Kinks' You Really Got Me. The inventiveness of this band just gets me every time. Just give us a new full length album already.

So i heard El Dorado the new Iron Maiden single. I'm hoping this is another Benjamin Breeg thing cause while I find parts of AMOLAD very good, the first single was one of the album's most generic and sucky songs. Similarly El Dorado has a horrible dead on arrival feel to it. Unnecessarily long with an intro pointlessly cadged from Wasted Years and tiresome except for the guitar solos. Also almost every song on this album too crosses the 7 minute mark. Someone really needs to man up and tell Harris and co that long does not necessarily mean good or epic. They should drag Manowar into the same room while delivering this little lecture.

Heard the new Pain of Salvation and I have to file it under 'Jesus! What the fuck just happened?' This appears to be principally a stripped down white boy blues album with no real scorching guitarwork that redeems most music in that genre. Instead you have Gildenlow shunting out pretty much everyone else in the band to do Tori Amos/Alanus gasping vocal impersonations of the annoying NO ONE CAN FEELS MY PAIENNN variety. It's got to be the most vocally self indulgent album I've heard - just a few steps short of Mike Patton's ridiculous a capella albums which step over the threshold into being totally unlistenable. And yet I find many of the songs on this very compelling and am drawn to hear them.

Listened to the new Borknagar album, Universal and in the name of all that is unholy, WHAT THE FUCK happened to these guys? I mean, I haven't really followed them since Epic, which was quite excellent, as was Quintessence, in pushing the whole progressive black metal shtick but somewhere between Epic and the new one, the band seems to have collectively opted to chop off their balls. This is like the black metal version of Kenny G. Elevator extreme metal? Huge market in Scandinavia, I hear. Bleh.
Escher's Knot - Tessellations
Another one of these Indian bands with oodles of talent but NO fucking clue on how to write a good song. I have sat through this twice now and I can't remember a SINGLE good riff from this turd of an album. Absolute waste of 100 bucks.
Mayhem - Ordo Ad Chao
I'm liking this more and more with each listen. The more ambient/atmospheric passages are surprisingly well executed and even though the vocals are weaker than I would like, the album retains an aura of menace that most BM albums of the mid 2000's lacked.
Emperor - Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire and Demise
Wolf - Ravenous
Razor - Violent Restitution
