I generally stay away from anyone who takes music too seriously. It's music and you do follow it to an extent but people, acc. to me, do not need to have similar music tastes to enjoy each others company. I can enjoy myself with all sorts of people as long as someone doesn't take the music thing too far; this includes entire spectrum of specimens from routine desi music chicks[ I must stress here that I am a huge old hindi film music nerd]to metal douchelords.

Hahaha! Most of the posts here are certified gold. As for me, my tendency to switch off and zone out in uninteresting social situations has kept me from genuinely hating too many people, except the ones intrusive enough to try wriggle through my 'do not disturb' shield.
I have been irritated several times by closet-feminist fans of female singer-songwriters, whose belligerence tends to be multiplied when alcohol is added to the equation. Most of the time, the argument begins when I've zoned out (with a suitably blank expression) while some unremarkable Sheryl Crow or Sarah Maclachlan song is playing at a party.
Antagonist: Isn't this great?
Me: Not really.
A: What?! You just can't stand the thought of a woman actually kicking ass at music.
M: I can't stand boring music. Don't care about the plumbing on whoever's making it.
A: Yeah right! Name ONE female artist that you like!
M: (finding first name that comes to my head) Sandy Denny.
A: Who's she?
M: Well...she did the guest vocals on Battle of Evermore.
A: Oh! SO...if she has some sidey role, then you'll accept it, but if she's the main act, then you've got a problem with it. Typical!
M: Fairport Convention, you ignoramus! WTF is wrong with you?! I mentioned Led Zep because that's the only thing she's done that you've probably heard!
A: (mutters something and wanders off, having run out of ammo for now)
And the next time, it'll be the SAME argument verbatim, unless I change the name of the artist.
Also been vexed by overbearing Brit rock/pop fans who've asked all guests present to 'check this out' and then played Yellow, Fix You, Chasing Cars or something equally bland, with all the pomp of Symphony No.5 being played at Albert Hall and conducted by Beethoven's ghost. All the undecided souls in the group are naturally swayed over by this charlatan Emperor's New Fucking Clothes display, and obligingly go "Oohhh.." and "Ahhhh..." Obviously, the combination of that level of mediocrity and adulation has me reflexively looking faintly disgusted. Such dissent is easily noticed and pandemonium ensues, accusations of bigotry being flung around like poorly aimed shurikens. Then, the said fans later come up and presume to be eclectic because they've started listening to Anathema. Considering Ravi's recent rant, that actually turns out to be pretty funny on the whole.

Blues fans: People who have an insatiable appetite for hearing the same old shit over and over. What puts the sock in it though is when they, for some strange reason, dismiss death metal as "repetitive." While that's a fairly valid criticism and one that I'd be willing to accept (with reservations) from someone who listens to prog rock exclusively if he's talking about Cannibal Corpse, blues fans have NO right to talk to anyone about how something is repetitive and bereft of ideas. Also a lot of so-called blues fans I've met can't distinguish between BB King, John Lee Hooker and Stevie Ray Vaughan but are full of buzzwords like "legend!" and "classic soulful playing" when these names come up.
The same applies to REM fans. Even more so in fact. They are THE most idealess band to have ever made it this big for so long.

I like blues AND death metal. My tolerance for prog is low, though. What does this tell you?
Seriously though, someone who can't tell apart BB King, John Lee Hooker and Stevie Ray Vaughan is tone deaf. These are probably people who claim they listen to blues because they want to seem mature, but also earthy, or something like that.

I have a problem discussing music with anyone who listens to one style of music really. I'm narrow minded too, as in I only like rock music, but some of these guys hole themselves up in one or two sub sub genres and act like dicks. This is the same kind that starts complaining about "the lack of good music these days" once their style of choice saturates (eg: hard rock in the mainstream) or when their favourite labels start signing bands playing other styles.
