Mastodon - Crack the Skye 3 Years, 1 Month ago

So, anybody heard this yet? What is the general opinion? I'm just on my first listen of this and it sounds quite different while still sounding like Mastodon. Lots of clean vocals looks like which is a good thing and the whole band seems to have chilled out a bit.
After listening to this album all the way through, I'm just in complete awe. This album is fantastic.

Aha! Good to know - I'll get around to searching for this. Is Brann Dailor still doing those mental nonstop rolls?

Not as much, He's chilled out quite a bit on this one and there's a slight Mars Volta emo-prog feel that I got from this but overall fucking awesome.

No crazy drum rolls like the previous albums, and its not psychotic like the older albums. Its their mellow side, mostly clean vocals.I enjoyed the album, waiting for a good rip to come out with the last song. Or is it out already?
@ cow: the isis new album is pretty cool as well

Like this a lot though i have a horrible feeling the next album will suck. They've been mellowing with each album and this one while considerably less frenetic is still an excellent album. But yeah, i'm wholly suspicious of restraint and maturity.

After the first listen, I think the music is killer no doubt, but can't say the same about the production, especially the drums. Some of the vocal lines enter the cheese territory and remind me of those modern day Ozzy ballads.

Yeah, they used some big time corporate rock producer who took time time out between Bruce Springsteen albums to produce this one but overall I'm liking everything about this album.

Goddamn! My favourite release of the year so far - the songwriting is somewhere else. And well, if they're on the road to wussing out, at least they're doing it with a lot more panache than most bands. Strains of Schism in Queen of Karelia - heehee!

Drumming has taken a backseat but still a damn fine album.

^^ I still like Blood Mountain the best. This one is a bit less stoner friendly, the drums are too soft and there are no hooks that I can really sink my teeth into.

Still enjoying this album. Does anyone else think that Quintessence could be passed off as a torche song? For some reason it reminds me alot of something of their s/t
