1. You're lame. 2. You like your jokes spelt out for you. Slowly. 3. You think everybody might actually love Raymond. 4. You consider references to Yes and David Coverdale ‘obscure’. Assuming none of the above apply, the only reason you don’t love this has to be that you haven’t seen it yet. What makes it so good? The star siblings are a clueless duo, stumbling into one sticky situation after another, from getting lured to a hooker’s bedroom to being violenty assaulted by Shaggy and Scooby. Doctor Venture is a reluctant single parent, pragmatic, self-centred and perpetually in the shadow of his dead dad. Brock Samson needs only the smallest slight made to him or his adopted family as a reason to disembowel the offending party. On their own, the primary characters are fun. But together, the chemistry is spectacular, and terrific situations are a dime a dozen. VB doesn't bother denying that its target audience are adults, and so most of the humour is going to fly right over the heads of all but genius kids. It's a rare feat getting a cartoon this fun without exclusively using toilet humour, though it does deign to literally stoop there on several occasions. The first season wades right into it, poking fun at superhero, sci-fi and amateur detective genres (to name a few) with affectionate gusto. The proceedings are helped by a motley crew of other characters, who in any other situation would be cool enough to have their own show. The subplot involving the Monarch and Dr. Girlfriend comes close to upstaging the main act on several occasions. Close, but not quite – Brock is too cool. Questions keep popping up in your mind - how much ass would Dr. Orpheus kick if he really blew his top? Can 21 and 24 ever get even a drive-by right? Or a drive-thru, for that matter?! If Phantom Limb ever played cricket, how would they check for straight arm action? Oh right, they don't play cricket out there. There’s not much point attempting to sum up why a whole season is as kickass as it is. Each episode here could do with lengthy passages detailing why exactly they rule. But take my word for it, and go watch it for yourself. Read next: The Venture Bros Season 2
